Win the Wolsey Lodges prize for November. This is a two-night weekday stay for two at Dowfold House, a multi-award-winning luxury B&B in Weardale, just outside Durham. Built in the 1860’s by John Pease, the first Quaker MP, for his senior mine managers, Dowfold House is a hugely welcoming place where guests can bring their children, their dogs, and even – thanks to stabling next door – their horses. Rupert and Jill are delightful hosts who love entertaining guests and sharing their love of the region.
At Dowfold House guests are free to bask on the patio, laze in the conservatory or relax on a sofa by the open fire. The extensive gardens are known for their flower borders and views over the Wear Valley, with manicured lawns ideal for games of croquet or boules.
There are three comfortable and well-equipped bedrooms here, all ensuite. Breakfast is invariably a highlight, with local ingredients – many from Dowfold House’s own vegetable garden – served on crisp linens and fine china.
There’s plenty to do in the area. The city of Durham is less than 20 minutes away, and Newcastle, Sunderland and the Durham Coast are within easy reach. The village of Crook, where Dowfold House is situated, is a gateway to the Durham Dales and the North Pennines AONB.
