Six great gardens of Southern England

Sheffield Park Gardens

If you love wandering around beautiful gardens, then Boreham House B&B in East Sussex is the place for you to stay! Not only do we have our own gorgeous walled garden and another couple of acres you can enjoy and relax in while taking in the marvellous views over the High Weald, but there are at least six gardens open to the public within an hour’s drive – and they’re amongst the best in the country.

1. Sissinghurst Castle Garden

Sissinghurst is the world renowned garden created by Vita Sackville West and is about 45 minutes from Boreham House. It is now well looked after by the National Trust.

2 Great Dixter

Great Dixter is a fabulous garden created by Christopher Lloyd and approximately 30 minutes from Boreham House. The house itself is re-opening on May 17th and Great Dixter also runs courses in various horticultural specialities, including Long Season border planting, meadow and tropical gardening. These days Great Dixter is run as a charitable foundation.

3 Pashley Manor Gardens

Pashley Manor Gardens is the loveliest of gardens and – somewhat unusually – is still privately owned. It is the very best of what you would expect an English Country Garden to be plus an excellent café! Just 25 minutes from Boreham House.

4 Sheffield Park Gardens

Sheffield Park Gardens is another National Trust property and a beautiful spot to spend time – there are acres to wander around with four lakes and many tress and shrubs from around the world – the rhododendrons are particularly magnificent. The Bluebell Railway is a steam train that runs between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead. Sheffield Park is 40 minutes from Boreham House.

5 Wakehurst

Wakehurst is owned by the National Trust but managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It houses the world’s largest seed bank but also has over 490 acres to explore! Wakehurst is about an hour from Boreham House.

6 Herstmonceux Castle

Herstmonceux Castle is one of Southern England’s most impressive buildings, but it also has beautifully themed formal gardens as well as 300 acres of carefully tended woodland. Best of all it really is just on Boreham House’s doorstep – it’s just a five minute drive or a 15 minute walk!

Currently, advanced booking is required for all the above.

This is just a taster of where you can visit if you come to stay with us – we look forward to welcoming you to Boreham House!

Simon & Sara Parker

Sara and Simon both love entertaining and nothing is too much trouble, including making reservations for guests at local pubs and restaurants. Simon is a business consultant and Sara left her career in higher education, having worked in the Middle East and Africa, once the restoration was complete. They also have a charming Norfolk terrier called Rosie.
