A small well-appointed retreat in West Dorset

An indoor pool, refined decor and family-style cooking make West Compton House B&B especially pampering and indulgent.  Luxury home comforts and cuisine, celebrating the best local produce, are complemented by a sincere B&B welcome.

West Compton House is a “Gentrified” Georgian former farmhouse property in the village of West Compton in rural West Dorset. It has three elegant guest B&B bedrooms, an indoor pool, steam room and sauna, cuisine using the best quality ingredients and over four acres of grounds which come into their own in the spring and summer.

There are two guest bedrooms on the first floor, with views over the terrace and pond to the rolling Dorset hills. One is a super king and the other a double, both with walk in showers and separate bath. A third guest bedroom, also En-suite, is on the second floor with views over the kitchen garden: this can be configured as a twin or a super king double. All have pocket sprung Savoir mattresses dressed in fine Egyptian cotton linens, Smart TVs with apps and tea and coffee facilities, with fluffy bathrobes and slippers provided.

Downstairs there is more. The property dates back to 1780 so the drawing room was probably once a farmer’s Sunday parlour, to take afternoon tea around the open fire. The interior was designed by London-based Emma Farquharson, a member of the (Eldridge) Pope brewing and farming dynasty, and antique furnishings into a clean, contemporary design.   There’s an orangery and the pool pavilion – designed by Dorchester architects, Crickmay, who once employed a young Thomas Hardy – contains an indoor heated pool, sauna and steam room. This is a great place to relax, with unlimited complimentary teas and coffees on offer.

The Pool Pavilion gives onto a South-facing stone flagged terrace.  From the front door there are steps down a bank sown with wildflowers to a to a lily-clad pool, as well as formal gardens of sunny terraces, topiary-fringed lawns, mature trees and a copse of mixed woodland. To the rear of the property there are kitchen gardens growing fresh produce for the table and more secluded seating: the grounds run to over four acres in all, and two public footpaths thread out into the rolling chalk hills of the West Dorset Downs.

The cuisine is of the highest standard. Breakfasts are made from the finest ingredients locally sourced where possible and range from a classic ‘Full English’ to an imaginative selection of Dairy Free, Gluten Free or Vegetarian options. At West Compton House flexibility is key. Should you wish to take lunch here you have only to ask, and simple evening meals can also be provided by arrangement: the style is traditional, with wholesome British and Continental traditions transformed by a fresh and innovative approach. Alternatively, there are many restaurants and pubs in the area: just ask for particular recommendations.

With just three guest bedrooms West Compton House never feels crowded. Everything here is bespoke and tailored exactly to your taste: your comfort is paramount. For the ultimate luxury rural retreat, this is the place.

Location

West Compton House is set in over four acres of landscaped gardens and overlooks a small valley that nests in the chalk hills of the Dorset Downs. There are countless pretty villages nearby, including Powerstock and Askerswell. It's less than 10 miles to Bridport, with its pop-up artisan food, antique and vinyl markets, and independent shops, and two miles further to West Bay, the sea, beaches and Jurassic Coast. Lyme Regis, with its fossil shops and beach is less than half an hour away, or the spectacular coast at Lulworth Cove. Dorchester is about 10 miles the other way, with its Roman relics and county museum, Thomas Hardy's house and Maiden Castle, the UK's largest iron age hill fort - perfect for a long (and occasionally steep) walk. There are good pubs in the area.
