“Comfortable, tranquil and serene” is this Herefordshire home

There are spectacular views from this spacious but cosy 18th century farmhouse B&B, built next to a motte & bailey castle close to the border with Shropshire and Powys. The country, along with skylarks, mistlethrushes, swallows, housemartins and red kites can be enjoyed using the binoculars present in each room.

It is touches such as these that make a stay at Upper Buckton so memorable – guests are made to feel like a member of the family. Back after a wet and muddy on a hike? There is a heated boot room for boots and jackets or hand over dirty clothes, they will be be returned, washed and folded, the next morning. Children of all ages are made very welcome.

It is reflected in the three guest bedrooms. All are fitted with smart TVs, DAB radios, phone charging points and more. Teas, real coffee bags, biscuits and fresh milk are provided. The furnishings are a lovely mixture of antique and vintage, but the beds are strictly 21st century! The crisp white linens are organic cotton, duvets and pillows are hypo-allergenic and the feather pillows are Downafresh certified using ethically sourced feathers. All bedding is OEKO-TEX certified. There are bathrobes and towels – as well as flannels – for every guest, and the toiletries are paraben- and microbead-free and untested on animals. Two of the guest bedrooms are en suite, while the other shares a private bathroom. There is an additional room ideal for families or friends travelling together if they don’t mind sharing a bathroom.

Drag yourself away from the comfort of your room and downstairs there is even more space to relax.  Each room has a comfortable seating area with plenty of guidebooks and maps. The dining room seats 12 and a verandah stretching the whole length of the property, has stunning views over the Teme valley. Enjoy breakfast here on warm summer days. Please note that we do not serve dinner, although there is an excellent pub within 5 minutes’ drive from the lodge.

The 1 ½ acre grounds feature fields, lawns and mature borders, sloping gently down to a millstream that runs along the bottom of the garden; there’s covered parking for your car and stables should they be needed.

Upper Buckton is perfect for the active. Walkers, cyclists or riders will love exploring this beautiful and unspoilt area. But it is equally suited to just relaxing and enjoying your stay. This isn’t a lodge that sends guests out for the day. Feel free to lounge around, making the most of the house and garden. Pasture is all around, usually gently busy with sheep. Red kites and buzzards fly overhead, egrets wander along the millstream at the bottom of the garden and the lodges’ four hens, Gloria, Blanca, Polly and Sybil, are there for company.

Location

Upper Buckton B&B is ten miles to the west of Ludlow, in a rural part of Herefordshire but convenient for the Shropshire Hills and Wales. Ludlow is a beautiful town, with a magnificent castle, interesting shops and plenty of restaurants, as well as a great market (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and Sunday.) The area is known for black-and-white half-timbered villages, built in the era of wool wealth and lovingly preserved. Upper Buckton’s heated boot room and secure bike storage make it a great place for active travellers. Walkers can choose from the Herefordshire trail that runs right past the property or the Offa’s Dyke path, three miles away in Wales, while it’s only a 50-minute drive to the Brecon Beacons. There are great cycle trails threading through the countryside and the River Wye provides canoes and paddle boards for hire.
