Lovely converted farmhouse near the best beaches in Wales

When the owners of Penbontbren converted their farm buildings into a luxury B&B, they also developed the original farmhouse into a beautiful holiday cottage. Reverting to its traditional name of Y Ffermdy, this is a great place where a couple can relax in privacy and peace but is also ideal for groups of four or five adults – as well as a couple of children – to create a memorable family holiday.

Accommodation in Y Ffermdy starts with a prime bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. There’s a further twin/double bedroom, a twin suitable for children up to 15 and a single bedroom, conveniently sited on the ground floor. These share a family bathroom – again with both tub and shower – and a separate WC.

There’s a large and well-equipped kitchen with a farmhouse table, ideal for serving breakfasts or convivial evening meals. There are two sitting rooms, one with an Inglenook fireplace and wood-burning stove, a small conservatory and a private, enclosed garden. This makes it ideal for small children as well as pets: up to two dogs are welcome by arrangement.

Guests here are greeted by a welcome pack with bread, butter and other essentials. There’s a local farm shop for premium and local specialities, ideal ingredients for any meal. And you’re always free to wander around Penbontbren’s seven acres, with its streams, croquet lawn and rolling rural views. But the coast, with its spectacular coves, headlands and beaches, is just three miles away and inland there’s the whole of the Cambrian Mountain range to explore.

Off season Y Ffermdy Cottage can be booked for four nights or more: in peak season the minimum is a seven-night stay. Prices vary depending on season and party size: Two people can stay for four winter nights from £500, while a party of four or more, travelling in peak season, will pay £1,575 for a seven-night stay. Location

West Wales is remote and unspoiled, but shelters picturesque beaches, friendly little towns and beautiful countryside. It's less than three miles to the safe, sandy beaches of Penbryn and Tresaith. There are great fishing opportunities nearby with sea trout and salmon on the coast and plenty of river fishing and trout farms inland. Cardigan Bay has grey seals and a resident schools of bottle-nose dolphin - one of only two in the country. Birdlife is prolific, with red kites, goshawks and peregrine falcons often seen. Ceredigion Coast Path is three miles away, but walkers and cyclists can choose from a range of mountains and moors. There are plenty of great golf courses nearby, not to mention the towns of Cardigan, Newcastle Emlyn and Aberaeron.
