Long Crendon Manor

Step through centuries of history, crafted into one unforgettable Lodge.

Over the years Long Crendon has featured as the backdrop for many films and TV shows, Midsummer Murders for one and most recently, The Woman in Black. Originally a dwelling for the abbots of Notley in 1187, the east and west wings were added by the 15^th century, before renowned architect Philip Tilden restored and extended the Manor to its current magnificence in the 1920s.

The manor’s master bedroom is Laline’s, with antique furniture and a four-poster bed. Views are of the Chilterns to one side and the courtyard to the other. Lady de L’Isle’s bedroom overlooks the walled maze garden, and apart from the king-sized double bed also has a large dressing room with twin beds – ideal for families.

Finally, the Yellow Bedroom is furnished in a French style and overlooks the apple orchard with its resident geese, ducks and hens. All three guest rooms are very spacious with en-suite facilities, bathrobes and toiletries. All duvets are duck down and pillows goose feather.

Guests are more than welcome to make use of the oak-paneled drawing room complete with log burning fire, the medieval hall with its ‘twin truss and crown post’ structure or The Private Lives or Henry the VIII, wood-paneled library.

Long Crendon Manor is steeped in history, with direct links to the Battle of Hastings and the Magna Carta. As you pace the ancient floors you can feel the past in every pore.

It’s wood-pannelled interior is a media magnet. Countless Midsomer Murders have taken place on their polished floorboards. It’s been a big-screen location for The Private Lives of Henry VIII, the Seven Dials Mystery and the Woman in Black.

Outside, all is relaxed and welcoming, but make sure you give yourself enough time to explore the garden fully. There’s a croquet lawn, tennis court, walled maze garden and, in high summer, a swimming pool. You’ll need to stay a few nights to take everything in.

Shop before you leave. In Long Crendon’s stables you’ll find a farm shop, an artisan bakery, a licensed cafe and a florist. Long Crendon also operates as a boutique farm, raising rare breed pigs and using apples from their orchard to make craft cider widely enjoyed in the area’s pubs.

Location

Long Crendon village itself has a beautiful winding High Street with many thatched cottages, two old pubs and St. Mary's church at the end, next to Long Crendon Courthouse, one of the National Trust's first ever properties.

This is a fantastic location to explore wonderful attractions such as the Oxford Botanic Garden, The University of Oxford, Blenheim Palace and other National Trust properties, a museum and golf club.
