Hardwick House B&B
12 St John's Hill, Shrewsbury SY1 1JJ, EnglandListed luxury in Shrewsbury’s medieval centre
One of the finest Georgian houses in Shrewsbury, Hardwick House offers bed and breakfast accommodation in a fabulously central location. The property is Grade II* listed but is eminently comfortable, offering character and history alongside very modern comforts. Though it’s right in the heart of town the walled garden is a peaceful haven, with a magnificent brick-built octagonal summer house that is separately listed in its own right. There’s no better Shrewsbury home.
There are two handsome and spacious double bedrooms that can be arranged either as twin rooms or as super-king doubles, each with en-suite bathrooms. Beds are dressed with white cotton bed linens and rooms are equipped with TVs and hospitality trays. The Oak bedroom is a spacious double noted for its Georgian wood paneling. The Acorn room, with painted paneling, is also large and adjoins a further twin bedroom: these can be booked at the same time in which case the two rooms share the bathroom. This is ideal for families or groups of friends travelling together as it forms a very comfortable suite. There is, of course, wifi throughout.
Breakfast is provided in the superb oak-paneled dining room with a traditional cooked breakfast, freshly-baked bread, home-made jam and marmalade, cereals, muesli, yoghurts and fruit. Only the best fresh locally-sourced produce is used and is, where possible, free-range or organic. Special dietary requirements can be catered for on request.
The walled garden is a delight: a haven of peace in the in the heart of town. A highlight is the octagonal Summer House that has a separate Grade II* listing of its own, a delightful place to relax.
Despite its central location, off-street parking is straightforward. Hardwick House has a garage and a secure parking area – accessed rather thrillingly by a turntable: provide your ETA and Lucy will be on hand to let you in when you arrive.
Shrewsbury is one of England’s most delightful towns with a medieval centre of half-timbered homes. Hardwick House puts you at its heart: an atmospheric home rich in local history.

Location
Hardwick House is right in the heart of Shrewsbury, Shropshire's County Town, so there's lot to see and do within a few steps from the door. Much of the centre dates back to the Tudor period, with half-timbered houses hosting a range of independent shops, a traditional market, and countless restaurants, cafes and historic pubs. It sits in a loop of the River Severn, and there's a boat that offers a town river loop trip, while the more adventurous can have a go at canoeing. The Cathedral, the town prison, the Abbey, the Castle, Charles Darwin's birthplace (and school) and the Dingle gardens are amongst Shrewsbury's standout attractions. The Shropshire Hills AONB is a short drive to the south and Ironbridge World Heritage Site is a short drive to the east. The countryside around Shrewsbury has many National Trust and English heritage properties to explore. Shrewsbury train station is about ten minutes walk from Hardwick House and is well linked to the rest of the UK.
Reviews
"Wonderful experience to arrive and go up the steps to the impressive front door. A very pleasant welcome and once inside you immediately feel a world away from everyday life. A very lived in house however and the Acorn room was beautifully balanced, decorated and with luxurious bedding and china. After a breakfast with Lucy's homemade marmalade it was a few steps before being in an area offering extensive independent shopping set amongst Tudor buildings and artisan food. Hardwick House is in a perfect position to access the town, the River, The Dingle and provides a restful, special stay."
