Brook House
The Common, Bromham, Nr. Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN15 2JJ, EnglandDesigner delight on a Wiltshire ley line
Craftsmanship meets comfort at this spiritual B&B. From the minute you drive through the private gated drive it’s clear this is a unique property, a symphony of ancient history and cutting-edge design, and more than just a place to stay.
Brook House was forged from the ruins of a 1400’s farm house by renowned designer Mark Wilkinson. He designed the very first ‘country kitchen’ and was the first to bring granite, marble and stone worktops into use: for this he was in 2009 awarded an OBE. He put his heart and soul into restoring Brook House, retaining the facade and ancient beams, and signs of his ingenuity and taste are everywhere.
There are six guest bedrooms at Brook House. The master bedroom has a private sitting room, a gold leafed bathroom and original 15th century rafters. Three further bedrooms have king-, emperor- or Wilkinson-sized beds, and all have en-suite bathrooms with luxury toiletries. The last two bedrooms are on the top third floor and consist of a king-sized double and a twin room: these share a bathroom and a small kitchenette and are perfect for families. Linens are of the highest quality and comforts assured.
Though Brook House is very much a family home, there’s plenty of room set aside for guests’ use. There’s an imposing dining room, a bright and comfortable sitting room and a sunny terrace for long summer evenings.
And then there are the grounds. Brook House B&B is set in six glorious acres, of croquet lawns, flower beds, woodland walks and private lakes. One lake has it’s own ‘Hagrid’s Hut’ with a veranda overlooking the water; the perfect place to enjoy the sunset with a glass of something chilled. Take a walk over three of Brook House’s own fields and you’ll get to an abandoned quarry with its own stone circle: the Mary Ley line runs through the house and many guests find a sense of the mystical does indeed permeate this magical part of Wiltshire. You share the grounds with plenty of wildlife: visiting deer, swans and ducks on the lower lakes, the family dogs and more.
It’s hard to do justice to this stunning B&B. You just have to visit.
